Good News Story with a bit of humour thrown in. It can definitely be an interesting night on patrol.

Whilst on route to Whenuapai and Hobsonville, Massey CPNZ took a detour through the Westgate shopping area. A sharp pair of eyes spotted a suspicious moped scooter parked on the footpath.

A quick run of the plates identified a blue Suzuki Swift as the owner of the plates and definitely not a blue Moped!

Police were called, and Massey CPNZ were off on a daring high speed chase through Massey… reaching speeds of up to 30 kms per hour due to a very sick sounding Moped engine. A solid effort was made by the driver to elude the patrol to no avail, (actually, we don’t even know if he realised he was being followed) the high speeds were no match for the Suzuki Patrol car and the wee Moped was under observation at all times whilst Patrol maintained a safe distance due to rain.

The ‘chase’ took an unexpected turn when the driver remembered he had to stop off to pick up his Pizza. Whilst this was certainly laughable, it was a poor lapse of judgement on the driver’s side.

After collecting dinner and with a bottle of drink in a plastic bag wildly swinging from the handle, the driver then carried on through the back streets of Massey. He was rendered unable to drive the moped in a safe manner whilst performing his balancing act, before nearly losing drink, pizza and life at a roundabout. With a few gasps from the patrollers witnessing this, the driver was nearly bowled over by an unsuspecting car due to failing to indicate. The oncoming car thought the moped was going straight ahead through the roundabout but managed to stop before it could deliver a sharp dose of reality to the Moped. It appeared the safety of the pizza was a priority over the safety of other road users and himself.

Off he…sped…again before doing a disappearing act up a long dark driveway.

Patrol parked nearby and awaited the arrival of the Police who having caught a whiff of what was hopefully a pepperoni pizza made a swift arrival time.

Findings:
Plates were found to be stolen and removed from the vehicle.
The ‘owner’ could not provide proof of ownership and the vehicle was subsequently removed from the property, hopefully to be returned to it’s rightful owner.

Many thanks to the driver of the unknown car for their evasive action in preventing a skittled moped and driver.

And of course, many thanks to Massey CPNZ for the quick spotting and action in having this vehicle removed from the road. We wish it a speedy recovery and hopefully a timely reuniting with its true owner. Another one bites the dust!

Whenuapai and Hobsonville, never fear – whilst Patrol was indeed temporarily distracted, the issue was dealt with swiftly and they promptly continued their patrol in your area into the early hours of the morning.
