Every Sunday morning, while many are still in bed, a group of highly motivated individuals can be found running through the streets of Auckland Central, pushing through their limits to meet press-up targets and sparring in the boxing ring. Why? They all share a common goal: preparing for the Physical Appraisal Test (PAT), a crucial step for members of the Pathway to Police (P2P) programme on their journey to joining the police force.
These training sessions cater to participants of all skill levels and experience. Despite their differences, the team shares a strong bond. “Everyone pushes each other in a positive way. I get a lot of motivation from my peers in group training. I feel like I can make it when I am with the people in the group,” says Pathway to Police programme member Jun. “In group training, we are united. It’s like we are building something together. Everyone is there not just to support each other but to learn from one another.”
The camaraderie is evident in the way participants hug and congratulate one another after completing challenging stamina exercises.
We spoke to some members fresh from a busy morning of running, press-up combinations, upper body strength work, and boxing drills under the motivational guidance of programme leader Chris Lawton. Reflecting on the experience, they highlighted how the training extends beyond physical fitness. “This programme is amazing. I’m fitter than I’ve ever been in my life. My mind is clearer. Even at my regular job, I feel as though I can think better and faster. I’m at my best when I am part of this team,” said John, a programme participant.
He wasn’t alone in feeling that group training impacts life beyond fitness. Another participant, Sajjad, remarked that the training helps maintain a level of physical activity often overlooked in everyday jobs. “One key benefit of this police training is the way it keeps you fit, something that can be easily forgotten in a regular job,” he said.
The Pathway to Police programme is open and free for all members of the community to join.
